STEP 5

Begin adding color by laying down a flat layer to get your base color in place. Start with light, consistent layers of color; you can always go back and add more layers of color later. When working up the color wheel, think in different shades of the same color to add interest to each building.

STEP 6

After adding light solid color for the first layer, it’s time to go back and add detail with more color. This could be shading or mark-making with complementary colors or colors from the same color family. I like to shade with darker colors from the same color family, or colors that are next to each other on the color wheel (e.g. green and blue would complement each other) or the color I used to outline. Shading takes a lot of practice, but it can make your drawing really come to life. Take your time slowly adding layers of color; it’s a gradual layering process that will produce soft depth.
